Sierra Nevada  over southern Spain next to the Moorish city of Granada is the second highest mountain massif in Europe. Forest and wild meadows along of fertile valleys covered in aromatic herbs, carry us to the beautiful white villages with its Berber style houses.  If we have proper weather conditions we climb the highest Spanish mainland point, the Mulhacen, 3479 meters. On our trip we enjoy Spanish hospitality and traditional cuisine. We can also explore one full day in Granada, home to the Moorish Alhambra Palace.

ITINERARY

Day 1

Arrival to Capileira, a beautiful Moorish village protected by UNESCO where you can walk along its narrow streets and discover its secrets corners.

Day 2: Capileira - Trevélez

This panoramic itinerary links the two highest villages of Sierra Nevada. The first half runs through holm oaks and pine trees forests, crossing irrigation ditches and streams, middle and high mountain pastures… During the route we will have a great viewpoint over the Trevelez River and the Mediterranean. After the little lunch stop with our picnic  we will follow through the trail to the scenic village of Trevelez.

Day 3: Trevélez –Poqueira lodge.

Today we will head to the Poqueira lodge following the “Alto del Chorrillo (Trevelez viewpoint)” trail. This ascent takes 6km and passes through a trail that is surrounded by forests and agricultural land and after a while we will see the change into high mountain pastures and vegetation.

Day 4: Poqueira lodge– Mulhacen – Universitary hostel.

We take the trail out of Poqueira’s lodge  walking up along the small river to reach the Mulhacen by its south side. After that we will get down till the crater bivouac (Vivac de la Caldera). We will follow afterwards through the guides pass (El paso de los guías) till la Carigüela bivouac, all the time watching the sea and, if the weather allows, it we might have the chance to spot the African coast. Our next goal will be reaching El Veleta peak and we will get down till to the Universitary hostel.

Day 5: Universitary hostel – Güejar Sierra

We get out from the Universitary hostel by 7:00 heading to San Francisco crags and the lodge of the same name (Los peñones de San Francisco). It is a lovely rote, long but almost always descending. It runs through beautiful scenery and millenarian irrigation ditches.  In the afternoon we can visit Güejar Sierra village.

Day 6: Güejar Sierra - Vereda de la Estrella around walk

Departing from the San Juan gorge we will get into this trail used in the past by the miners (we will find some leftovers from them on the way). This is doubtless one of the nicest places in Sierra Nevada.  Our trail back will take us through Vereda de la Estrella again.
